A PAIR OF FIGURE-SHAPED OIL LAMPS
Glazed ceramic
China, Eastern Han dynasty (25-220 AD)
A formally unusual pair. Each of the two similarly large figures has a large head, from which protrudes a tall, conical piece. Both are squatting on the ground, have sturdy thighs and are holding a small, undefinable object in both hands. The glaze is typical for the Han era and displays a plentiful amount of silvery luster (that seems to increase the mysticalness). Possibly a fertility idol used as a lamp.
