Madonna and Child Carved, polychromed and gilded sculpture. Renaissance. 16th century. Mary is standing, holding the Child against her chest with her left arm. She is covered in rich courtly robes, polychromed in red, ochre and gold tones, and wears a long cloak. She is resting on a cloud with the head of an angel. Magnificent example of Spanish Renaissance imagery, specifically the Roman-type sculpture which developed concurrently with Spanish mannerism. The Italian artists who worked in Rome had a marked influence on the style, especially Raphael and Michaelangelo, which was initiated by Gaspar Becerra in his imposing Main Altarpiece at Astorga Cathedral. One of the greatest exponents of this style was Juan de Anchieta. The crown is a later addition Height: 133 cm.
