Seat of wisdom (Sedes Sapientiae) Carved, gilded and polychromed wooden sculpture. Italy. Gothic. Circa 1400. Magnificent depiction of the Seat of wisdom and example of Italian Gothic. The Madonna is crowned as queen and seated on her throne holding the Christ Child on her knee, which is off centre, as is habitual in the Gothic period. The Christ Child blesses the faithful with His right hand. Both hold apples in their hands. The mastery of the sculptor is reflected in the fine and expressive faces of Mary and Jesus, magnificently carved, they almost appear chased. They are perfectly proportioned and their family relationship is reflected in their similar appearance. Mary wears simple clothes, but the sculptor has given them marvellous treatment, making them fall in a myriad of tiny folds to the feet, to enrich them. The elaborate throne decorated on both sides with pointed Gothic windows is outstanding. The gilding is from the 16th century and the polychrome has been touched up in some parts. Provenance: acquired in Christie´s London on 14/12/1999, lot nº 52. Height: 77 cm.
