Au préalable un complexe mécanisme de prises de vues photographiques est activé et celles-ci sont envoyées sur Terre grâce à un signal radio avant l'impact. Le programme "Ranger" avec les programmes "Surveyor" et "Lunar Orbiter" constitue l'une des principales source de collecte d'information pour la découverte de la nature exacte du sol lunaire avant l'accomplissement des missions Apollo destinées à faire marcher l'Homme sur la Lune. 1965.
