Mempeki Daruma (????) - Wall-facing Daruma Signed: Kensho Sealed: unread Date: ca 1900? Size: 114.5 x 42.4 cms (mounting) 27 x 39.5 cms (painting) 45 x 17 inch (mounting) 11 x 16 inch (painting) Technique: sumi on paper Condition: Chûberi (middle part) of moss-green silk, top and bottom of light-brown silk. brown silk brocade ichimonji and futai, brown wooden rollers. Fitted wooden box. Very good/fine overall condition. The sumi very thin and transparently applied. A certificate by Stephen Addiss accompanies this painting. He has translated the calligraphy as follows: "Daruma faces the wall in meditation, behind him the flowers of spring". "Wall-gazing Daruma" is also referred to as "One-stroke Daruma" or "Ipputsutsu Daruma". Origin: Japan Period: ca. 1900
