Kultfigur, Neuguinea frühes 20. Jh./ Cult figure, New Guinea early 20th century H. 56 cm, Sockelmaß ca. 17 cm. Sepik-Region, südöstliches Gebiet am Yuat-Fluss. Geschnitzte Figur aus hellbrauner Hartholzsorte und gemalt mit Naturpigmentfarben in Rot, Schwarz und Weiß. Schutzgeist der Unterwelt in der Form eines stilisierten Reptils, möglicherweise Waran. Der Schutzgeist hält in seinen Händen den Kopf eines mythischen Vorfahren oder eines verstorbenen Clan-Ahnens. Die Quellaugen des Geists und des Ahnens sind mit Muschelmaterial und Nassa-Schnecken belegt. Die gesamte Oberfläche weist einen Originalzustand auf, am Sockel und oben Altersriss, vorne am Kopfauswuchs Bestoßung. Die möglicherweise nachgeschnittene Basis wirft die Frage auf, ob dieses Objekt Teil eines Pfostens in einem Männerhaus war. Von dem Kölner Sammler um 1970 bei dem Kunsthändler Alois Faust in seiner Kölner Galerie erworben. Faust war ein früher Mitarbeiter des Kunsthändlers Alfred Flechtheim.// H. 56 cm, base 17 cm. Sepik region, southeastern area on the Yuat River. The sculpture represents a guardian spirit of the underworld as a stylized lizard- like reptile. The figure holds in his hands the head of a mythical ancestor or a deceased clan ancestor. Carved from light brown hardwood and painted with natural pigments in red, black and white. The lizard- like eyes are in inlaid shell material, the ancestral eyes with inlaid Nassa snails. The entire surface is in original state, at the base and top old crack. The base, which may have been recut, raises the question of the stand of this item, it was possibly part of a post from a men's house. This item acquired from the Cologne collector around 1970 from the art dealer Alois Faust in his gallery in Cologne. Faust was for long years employees of the art dealer Alfred Flechtheim. (92)
