Farmers herding cows by a watermill in a mountainous forest, signed and dated 'Anna van Sandick/1856' (lower centre), oil on canvas, 75x100 cm, , Provenance:-In the collection of the family of the present owner for circa 100 years., When Anna van Sandick moved to Kleve in 1848, she became a pupil of Barend Cornelis Koekkoek. However, as a woman she could not join his studio with all male students. In acknowledgment of her talent, Koekkoek provided private lessons to Van Sandick at her own residence.As Van Sandick herself recalled:‘Deze Koekkoek wilde mij op zijn atelier hebben, maar in die tijd ging dat niet zo. […]Hij kwam dan ook bij mij aan huis […] op atelier ben ik nooit geweest’.Anna van Sandick was one of the only Dutch female landscape painters active in the midst of the nineteenth century.
