We were were so close, that, in 1962, during the «New Realists» exhibition at the Sidney Janis Gallery, European friends like Martial Raysse, Rotraut Klein and Nikki de Saint Phalle wrote to me to tell me about an artist in New York who did accumulations of objects on canvas, very merry and picturesque. They suggested I consider transposing my accumulations onto canvas as well! And yet, what Warhol does is completely different, and I have never felt threatened by his work, or felt any kind of rivalry for that matter. Andy's most accomplished paintings show everyday images of our civilization. Moreover, he is a true painter, in his relation to color and scale. The Andy that I knew as a friend was always charming, but behind his glossy, seemingly shallow exterior, I always found him to be very watchful. I think he had a well compartmentalized brain and he could function on different levels of complexity at the same time: as an artist, a director, a permanent show, a sociologist, a collector and a philosopher.» Discussion avec Jean Ferrero.
