MARCEL DUCHAMP (1887-1968) CARTE-LETTRE AUTOGRAPHE SIGNÉE, à Charles ESTIENNE, datée Paris 18 Nov. 1954, 1 page in-12 oblongue (taches d'encre), enveloppe autographe avec l'adresse de Duchamp. Lettre de toute importance, entièrement consacrée à Picabia, mort l'année précédente. Elle est adressée au critique d'art et poète breton Charles Estienne, qui avait défendu l'art de Picabia (Hommage à Picabia, Galerie Craven, 1952) et qui jouera un rôle important dans le soutien de la peinture surréaliste et contemporaine. Duchamp rend un magnifique hommage à son grand ami disparu : Beaucoup de gens répondent par « oui » mais avec Francis c'était toujours « non » car l'incessante trouvaille de chaque instant, une explosion à facettes mul-tiples qui coupait court à toute argumentation. Francis avait aussi un don d'oubli total qui lui permettait d'attaquer le nouveau tableau sans le souvenir-influence des précédents. Fraîcheur sans cesse renouvelée qui fait de lui un 'plus-que-peintre'. A very important letter, entirely dedicated to Picabia, who died the year before. It is addressed to the Breton art critic and poet Charles Estienne, who had defended Picabia's art (Hommage à Picabia, Galerie Craven, 1952) and who would play an important role in supporting surrealist and contemporary painting. Duchamp pays a magnificent tribute to his late friend: 'Many people answer with «oui» but with Francis it was always «non» because the incessant finding of each moment, a multi-faceted explosion that cut short any argument. Francis also had a gift of total oblivion which allowed him to attack the new painting without the memory-influence of the previous ones.
