TÊTE DE DÉMON EN TERRE CUITE Ancienne région du Gandhara, vers le IVe siècle A TERRACOTTA HEAD OF A DEMON Ancient region of Gandhara, circa 4th century With a glaring expression of exposed teeth and a thick furrowed brow beneath a thick mop of dishevelled hair, stand. 22.5cm (8 7/8in). Footnotes: Provenance: Jean-Pierre Rousset, Paris (1936-2021) The head is presented on its left profile in high relief suggesting it was part of a large narrative scene possibly relating to the Mara and his retinue attacking the Buddha as he approached enlightenment. The retinue of demons employed by Mara are often animal headed or grotesque figures like the present lot.
