Provenance:
Robert Rousset, Paris (1901-1981)
Jean-Pierre Rousset, Paris (1936-2021)
The domed treatment of the hair is not normally associated with Maitreya but a complete figure in the British Museum has a similar treatment of the head, see W.Zwalf, A Catalogue of the Gandhara Sculpture in the British Museum, 1996, no.53 (1880.218). Also compare with a closely related example sold at Christie's New York, 23 March 1999, lot 6 and 27 March 2003, lot 6.
