Lehmann (for S. Selfisch) 1583 Folio: [3 (of 4)]-210-472 (of 473) ff. (1 f. in prelims (?) and f. 322 (5H6; blank?) missing (?), title used and underlaid with small loss, first and last few ff. strengthened at edges, corner or sm. part of ff. 2, 131 (part I) and 1, 121, 179, 286, 438, 458 (part II) repaired with loss of some text, lower corner of ff. 287-290 (part II) gnawed at with loss, some sm. holes (i.a. face of the devil censored creating sm. hole at verso f. 155); spotting and browning, some minor soiling, some ms. underlinings or marg. notes). Modern blind-ruled sheep over wood "à l'ancienne" (a few tiny rubbings esp. at corners & joints), spine with 5 raised bands, modern vellum endpapers. Sold w.a.f. Very rare commentary on the New Testament, by the German Lutheran theologian J. Habermann (or J. Avenarius, 1516-1590). Nicely illustrated with 83 large woodcuts showing scenes from the life of Christ, with mark "4+" in the image, and also monogrammed "CE" with cutter's knife underneath; date "1561" in 1 image. According to Nagler, the images are cut by an unknown master of the school of Cranach the Younger, and first appeared in Luther's "Husz-postilla" (Wittenberg, Heirs Rhau for Selfisch, 1563).
