La brume bleue de la scène nocturne, parsemée de lumières émanant des réverbères et des fenêtres des bâtiments, crée une atmosphère vaporeuse et feutrée. Le traitement de la lumière et les variations subtiles de sa palette de couleurs, ici contenue dans un camaïeu de bleus sombres, illustrent les ambiances qu'il crée au sein de représentations urbaines et rurales du Nigeria. La qualité intimiste de ses études reflète une conviction personnelle dans le potentiel émotionnel de l'art : “Je suis profondément préoccupé par le fait que mon art touche et percute l'esprit du spectateur, indépendamment du temps et de l'espace”. Abiodun Olaku est né en 1958 dans l'État d'Ogun, au Nigeria. Il a suivi sa formation artistique à Lagos, à la Baptist Academy de 1970 à 1975 puis au Yaba College of Technology de 1976 à 1981. Dans les années qui suivent, il poursuit sa pratique de la peinture tout en travaillant comme fonctionnaire, puis démissionne en février 1989 pour se consacrer uniquement à sa pratique artistique. Il commence un travail intensif en studio aux côtés de ses collègues artistes Alex Shyngle, Felix Osiemi, Bunmi Babatunde et Bisi Fakeye aux National Studios of Modern Art, National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos. Olaku est membre de la Society of Nigerian Artists (SNA), premier vice-président, administrateur et membre fondateur de la Guild of Professional Fine Artists of Nigeria (GFA), et l'un des fondateurs et administrateurs des Universal Studios of Art, National Theatre, Lagos. In his large-scale oil painting, Misty Morning (1995), Nigerian painter Abiodun Olaku offers an elevated view of a busy street in Lagos. The blue haze of the misty nocturnal scene is peppered with glowing lights that emanate from the streetlamps and windows of buildings lining the road that cuts through the centre of the composition. Olaku's masterly handling of light, and the subtle variations in his cool colour palette, exemplify the luminous atmospheric effects he conjures in his acclaimed depictions of Nigeria's cities and natural landscapes. The affective quality of his elemental studies reflects his conviction in the emotive potential of art: “it is of deep passionate concern to me that my art communicates, and stirs the spirit of the viewer, irrespective of time and space”. Abiodun Olaku was born in 1958 in Ogun State Nigeria. He completed his art education in Lagos, first at the Baptist Academy from 1970 to 1975, before undertaking further study at the Yaba College of Technology between 1976 and 1981. In the following years, he continued to pursue his painterly practice while working as a civil servant. Olaku resigned from his governmental role in February 1989 to focus solely on his artistic practice. He began intensive studio work alongside fellow artists Alex Shyngle, Felix Osiemi, Bunmi Babatunde, and Bisi Fakeye at The National Studios of Modern Art, National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos. Olaku is a member of the Society of Nigerian Artists (SNA), the inaugural vice-president, trustee, and founding member of the Guild of Professional Fine Artists of Nigeria (GFA), and one of the founders and trustees of the Universal Studios of Art, National Theatre, Lagos.
