Nova Africae Tabula Auctore Jodoco Hondio. Amsterdam, 1619. Paper heavily browned. Split in lower part center fold repaired, 20 cm into engraved area. 375 x 500 mm. * The Hondius Africa was based on Mercator but the coastline, particularly of Madagascar, was considerably altered. Jodocus also made improvements in the Cape area. Presents a large handsome title cartouche of interlacing strap design, with a monkey's head at the top. Native craft, 4 ships, 3 sea monsters and 2 animals inland are expertly engraved, with particularly decorative calligraphy of the central west coast of the continent. - Tooley, p. 54; Norwich, Maps of Africa, p. 36 AFRIQUE
