Maurice Romberg de Vaucorbeil (1861-1943), Belgian/French Oriental painter, studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1883-1886 and went to Morocco as early as 1887 or 1888, where he lived first in Tétouan and later in Meknès, eventually becoming the first European painter to settle in Marrakech. Romberg traveled through Mauritania for several years beginning in 1890, accompanying the archaeologist Henri de La Martinière through North Africa. Moroccan equestrian group on horseback.
