Large three-story pagoda. China, second half 20th century In ivory. On wooden base. Measurements: 195 cm. pagoda; 205 cm. with base. Large pagoda in carved ivory. It consists of two bodies: the lower one serves as a support for the three-story pagoda. In this one, made entirely of ivory, every detail is carved with delicate richness, defining its architectural elements, such as small bells hanging from each roof, openwork borders as tracery, railings and galleries. Chinese characters are written on soffits and walls. The second floor depicts Buddha accompanied by sages. On the second floor we see musicians. On the upper floor, the goddess of compassion, Guanyin, is seated in front of a censer and is accompanied by two children. The four legs of the base rest on heads of mythological figures. The whole support is richly decorated with ivory carvings, representing dragons, lions, and vegetal and geometric motifs.
