Candlestick in the shape of an elephant. China, 19th century. Glazed porcelain. Measurements: 19 x 18 x 13 cm. The elephant is a symbolic animal in Chinese iconography. In ancient times, specimens could be found in the south of the country, and it was a much loved animal. It usually appears on porcelain in the form of a mask, for the handles of the pots, in a simply decorative way, although it is also a symbol of strength, sagacity and prudence. Its representation as a foot or pedestal is related precisely to this symbolic concept of an animal related to strength. Here we see it supporting the base of a candlestick, richly harnessed with garlands and embroidered cloth. Particularly noteworthy is the embroidered cloth that falls on both sides of its back, in which ornaments of great detail have been depicted.
