"Our Lady Immaculate". Carved, gilded and polychromed wooden sculpture. Castilian School. Renaissance. 16th century. In our opinion, this image is attributable to the Romanist artists, a branch of Spanish mannerism, which was markedly influenced by the Italian artists who worked in Rome, especially Raphael and Michelangelo. The movement was begun by Gaspar Becerra with his imposing main altarpiece at Astorga Cathedral, and the Basque sculptor Juan de Anchieta was one of its greatest exponents. 103 x 52 x 33 cm.
