CHARLES II of SPAIN Deed granting to Dominique de Mede, Baron of Santa Colonna, the right to open glass factories in the Low Countries. Brussels 9 Oct. 1681 1 f. (40 x 72 cm, plica 11 cm), on vellum, in French, with a large red wax pendant seal (seal used). The Irish glassmaker Mede (or Mead) "would have discovered the art of melting and making rock crystal" and would have demonstrated it in the palace of Madrid, the reason why he received this grant. In 1666, he signed a partnership with the glassmaker Bernard Perrot (1640-1709), founder of the royal glass factory of Orléans and famous for his use of red glass, a mystery at the time. Ref.
