Mary was sitting in her room reading the Scriptures when the Archangel Gabriel appeared and announced to her that she would give birth to the Son of God. The subject was popular for altar predelling. The table could originally have decorated a wedding chest (cassone). The painting was used as a secondary shop lid, as the applied lock shows.
