As the younger brother of Dossi Dosso, he was also active at the court of the Este in Ferrara under Alfonso I and then under Ercole II. As a court artist, he works with his brother on many different projects. Fresco decoration of palaces and villas, as well as panel painting on mythological subjects were added. He was also increasingly active as a portraitist and creator of devotional images. In 1517 he moved to Rome and joined Raphael's workshop. After the master's death (1520) he returned to Ferrara. The present work by Battista Doosi, in radiant colors and great sublimity in the composition, shows the Holy Family with St. Catherine in spiritual and lyrical harmony and expressiveness. The painting is one of the few works that have survived and should be seen as a devotional picture. The artistic fusion of the landscape and ancient ruins, which are completely influenced by his brother Dossi Dosso and the new direction of the School of Parma von Correggio can be seen in the figures, illustrate Battiatas Dossi's artistic fusion and further development in his painting.
