Japan, Edo period (1615-1868) The cover surmounted by a karashishi [lion dog] on a rockwork base, painted in underglaze blue and overglaze iron-red and gold with panels of lion dogs amidst flowers and foliage ground, blooming sprays and landscapes. HEIGHT 41 cm Condition: With expected traces of wear, the vase with underglaze craquelure that does not go through and a chip to foot rim. The finial a later addition. Provenance: Holzapfel collection, Geneva, Switzerland. This lot was acquired by a third-generation member of the Holzapfel family after 1995 and has remained in the family ever since.
