Contemp. vellum, flat spine titled in ink, red sprinkled edges (a few with some defects). In general good condition. Amsterdam reprints of memoirs of the French Royal Academy of Science, founded in 1666 by Colbert. They were published under different titles: "Histoire de l'Académie Royale des Sciences", "Histoire de l'Académie royale des Sciences, avec les Mémoires de Mathématiques et de Physique" and "Mémoires de mathématiques et de physique présentés à l'Académie royale des Sciences". Disparate collection, incl. years 1692-1693, 1699-1700, 1703-1757, 1764-1765, some published one or two years after the original, others more than twenty years after. Illustrated with 47 engr. front., 1432 engr. pl. and 146 tables not incl. in collation. Printer's booklists at the end of years 1704-1710, 1712, 1738, 1742, 1746, 1754. "All the sciences were represented and the list of scholars both from the Academy and "foreigners" merges with that of the representatives of science from the end of the 17th and 18th centuries. In addition to the memoirs, there are also Letters or extracts of Letters from various authors, addressed to academics. The memoirs generally took two to three years to appear and were the subject of many letters exchanged between the authors and the permanent secretary" (Sgard). Ref.
