Collection of 2 essential works. Doctor J.P.A. Fabre: Treatise on Goitre and Cretinism, and the relationship between these two conditions.  This is the second edition and the first with this title. The original edition (Essay on Goitre and Cretinism published in Turin), published in 1792, is very rare. This treatise became the reference work on the subject until the middle of the 19th century. Fodéré makes an excellent description of the endemic goiter and cretinism. He is the first to establish a link between the two conditions. He seems to foresee the notion of hypothyroidism. He draws attention to bone changes. He wrongly thinks that "cretinism is due to the concentration of air in the valleys rather than water". Cf. Garrison & Morton, 3810 (original edition); F. Merke, History and iconography of endemic goitre and cretinism, pp. 209-211; P. Fragu, Le regard de l'histoire des sciences sur la glande thyroïde (1800-1960), Ann. Endocrino, 1999, 60, 10-22: "an important stage in this transformation of medical knowledge. The great merit of Fodéré is to have linked cretinism and goitre"; J. Lelièvre, L'enfant inefficient intellectuel, p. 181: "The interest of Fodéré's treatise consists in having opened the way to a differential diagnosis by posing the question of etiology and treatment". Paris, Labé, 1857. XIX - 298 (1) pages followed by 4 absolutely extraordinary plates. Linked to the continuation : F.-E. Fodéré : Treatise on Goitre and Cretinism, preceded by a discourse on the influence of humid air on human understanding. In Paris, at Bernard's, An VIII (1800). (1) 248 (4, catalogue) pages. In 8° half green basane, spine past.
