Maqbool Fida Husain Totem Oil on canvas, dated “69” and signed bottom right. 175 x 84 cm Sometimes described as the “Indian Picasso”, Maqbool Fida Husain (1915-2011) is one of the most important subcontinental artists of the 20th century. His protean work, including numerous paintings as well as several billboards for cinema, documentaries and sculptures, draw as much on the abundant iconography of his native country as an Occidental  “avant-garde”. The painting Totem, signed with the artist’s name both in Latin characters and in Hindi (?????), is particularly representative of his multicultural approach and his attraction towards modernity. This vertical composition, vigorous and dynamic,
