Specifications: Watercolor on Paper Artist: Navneet Parikh 9.8 inches X 12.9 inches Scenes of activity within the four walls of the forts and palaces are a popular theme with the artists. Men in most erotic moods; women amusing themselves; scenes of dance and music etc are oft represented. Children are a part of a household ? their existence is not denied but their depiction in paintings is minimal. The architectural background suggests that the scene takes place inside the palatial walls. Beyond the walls, heads of large trees try to peep in. The glory of the sky is achieved in blue and golden hues. Coming back to architecture, it consists of pillars, arches, niches and domes and the artist brings out their existence in a harmonious way. A man selling items of major interest to the children is surrounded by them. The children are dressed well and wear strings of pearls. They are bare feet and only the seller is wearing slippers. The man holds a bamboo displaying his wares ? paper balloons painted in different colors and paper windmills tied to the edge of a long stick. The children have bought the desired items and are in the process of paying for them. The foreground is absolutely bare. The colour palette hinges between brilliant and sober. This description by Kiranjyot. Mughal Painting The Mughal school of painting runs parallel to the Mughal dynasty. It came into prominence in the sixteenth century, during the reign of king Akbar. It reached its zenith under the patronage of Akbar’s grandson – king Jahangir. The reign of the latter’s successor king Shah Jahan saw its decline and finally under the unsympathetic Aurangzeb it breathed its last. Indeed, as a school of art, the duration of Mughal painting was a limited one, extending only over approximately two and a half centuries. Actually, it has often been referred to as not exactly a school, but rather an exceptionally brilliant phase
