Cette œuvre sera incluse dans le catalogue raisonné Maurice Denis que préparent actuellement Mesdames Claire Denis et Fabienne Stahl. Peint en 1921 à la suite du voyage que Maurice Denis effectue avec sa fille Madeleine en Afrique du Nord (El Kantara, Biskra et Constantine puis Tunis et Kairouan), Le marché à Biskra est à rapprocher du Caravansérail à Biskra, conservé au musée du Prieuré, Saint-Germain-en-Laye (Inv. PMD 978.19.1) et de son pendant (non localisé): L’Abreuvoir à Biskra. Dans son Journal, TomeIII, 1921-1943 (La Colombe, Éditions du Vieux Colombier, Paris: 1957-1959), le peintre note: "Pittoresque intense; triomphe du ton local. Je pense aux carnets de Delacroix, plus qu’à sa peinture […]; ce qui domine ici c’est le rythme des chameaux, des ânes, et la fière allure, plutôt lente, des hommes […]". Painted in 1921 after Maurice Denis’ trip with his daughter Madeleine to North Africa (El Kantara, Biskra and Constantine, then Tunis and Kairouan), Le marché à Biskra can be compared to the Caravansérail à Biskra, held in the Musée du Prieuré in Saint-Germain-en-Laye (Inv. PMD 978.19.1) and its counterpart (not located) L'Abreuvoir à Biskra. In his Journal, Tome III, 1921–1943 (La Colombe, Éditions du Vieux Colombier, Paris: 1957–1959), the painter noted: “Intensely picturesque; triumph in local color. I think of Delacroix's notebooks, more than his painting […]; what dominates here is the rhythm of camels, donkeys, and the proud rather slow look of men."
