Gerald Kelly was educated at Cambridge before travelling to Paris to study. He met many Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters including Degas, Monet and Renoir, travelled around the world, and painted British and French society figures. He was a friend of Somerset Maugham and appears as a character under various pseudonyms in a number of his books. In the 1930s and 40s he was a favourite portraitist of the Royal Family, painting several members including the Coronation Portraits of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.
