Master de Calzada (Active in Palencia in the first decades of the 16th century) "The Annunciation" Oil and gold leaf on panel. Circa 1515. 45 x 56 cm. Maestro de Calzada, was an anonymous Master who was working in the Palencia area in the early decades of the 16th century. The name Calzada was given to him because he is the painter of the altarpiece at Calzada de los Molinos, which is now kept at the Palencia Diocesan Museum. It is believed that the Maestro de Calzada was trained by Maestro Alejo, as there are similarities between their work. As Pilar Silva notes about this painting: “Nothing is known about the origin of the Annunciation from circa 1515 which is on sale in Barcelona (fig. 15). However, it must have been part of a predella due to its format and its gold leaf background. It therefore makes sense to reduce the composition to its essential elements, the archangel and Mary in front of a prie-dieu. Both figures replicate the style of those in work by Calzada, especially Mary, with her dark hair, wide features and round cheeks. Bibliography: This painting is reproduced and commented on in: Silva Maroto, Pilar: En torno a la pintura del primer tercio del siglo XVI en Palencia: el Maestro de Calzada (On the painting of the first third of the 16th century in Palencia: The Maestro de Calzada) Published in the Anales de Historia del Arte, nº 6. (Annals of Art History) by Servicio Publicaciones UCM. Madrid, 1996. Pages. 177 and 187.
