Seat of Wisdom (Sedes Sapientiae). Carved, polychromed and gilded wooden sculpture. Possibly from Álva or Rioja Alta. Transition period between Romanesque and Gothic. Circa 1300. Interesting example of the Spanish Seats of Wisdom from the transition period between the Romanesque Sedes Sapientiae and the Gothic version of the enthroned Madonna. The Child is already positioned off centre and Mary moves closer to the Child resting her left hand on His back, yet there is no communication between the mother and son, as the posture of both is forward-facing and severe. Partially polychromed in the 16th century. Slight flaws. 90 x 31 x 25 cm.
