Master of Cervera de la Cañada (Active in the second half of the 15th century) "The Ascension of Jesus" Tempera on panel. 178 x 99 x 8 cm. With the name Master of Cervera de la Cañada we designate a painter who was active in Aragon in the second half of the 15th century, having a style that is clearly connected with that of Martín de Soria and the Master of Maluenda. In reference to this panel, it has been suggested by Albert Velasco that it could be from the same altarpiece that four other panels by the same master came from. These would be the Expulsion of Joaquim and Anne from the Temple (Fine Art Museum, Caracas), Presentation of Mary in the Temple (The Beaverbrook Art Gallery, Fredericton, Canada), Marriage of Mary (Fine Art Museum, Caracas) and the Coronation of the Virgin Mary (MNAC, Barcelona). Among them all there is a consistency in style, continuity in narrative sequence and the same treatment of the haloes of the saints and the Virgin Mary (they all have the distinguishing feature of luminous rays enriching the haloes). Provenance: - Eiffel Collection, Château du Petit Vernet, Saint Amand Montrond - Galerie Bresset Paris, Private collection, Paris. - Private collection, Barcelona Bibliography: - Publication by Velasco, Alberto: Virgin and Child with Musician Angels. The Master of Belmonte and Late Gothic Aragonese Painting, Jaime Eguiguren, Buenos Aires, 2017; p. 41-42, fig.23 (en color).
