‡ A FINE TURKISH SILVER-MOUNTED SWORD (SHAMSHIR), 18TH CENTURY with heavy curved single-edged blade of finely watered steel, inlaid with a gold cartouche on one face, silver hilt cast and chased in low relief and enriched with gilt borders, comprising a pair of langets with engraved foliate borders continuing around the quillons, the latter with moulded bud-shaped finials, engraved back-strap, and carved horn grips retained by three rivets, in its leather-covered wooden scabbard with large silver mounts cast and chased with foliate borders and enriched with gilding en suite with the hilt, comprising chape, middle-band and locket, the latter with a long hinged catch engaging the bottom of the hilt, two rings for suspensions, and struck throughout with silver marks 88.0 cm; 34 ¾ in blade The inscriptions read, in the teardrop roundel, in Persian, banda-yi shah-I vilayet 'abbas ("Slave of the King of Trusteeship (i.e. 'Ali), 'Abbas"), in the oblong cartouche, amal-i asad allah ("Work of Asad Allah").
