Nativity. Sculpted alabaster relief with polychrome and gilt residue. Nottingham. England. Gothic. 15th century. As is characteristic among the models from Nottingham, this relief has the typically rigid figures, lengthening of the hands and feet, the eyes stand out and there is great evocative and narrative strength. Flaws. From the middle of the 14th century until the Anglican reformation in the 16th century, alabaster sculpture workshops developed in the centre of England, especially around Nottingham. As well as monumental and funerary sculptures, there was a great demand for reliefs and altarpieces for the local market and for exportation. Comparative literature: F. Cheetman, English Medieval Alabasters. Oxford, 1984, nº 105-6. Provenance: Martí Mas Tubau collection, Barcelona. Acquired in Christie's on 7/7/1992, lot nº 63. 33,7 x 17 cm.
