Glazed pottery ceiling plaque or socarrat tile with cobalt blue decoration on a white background. Manises, Valencia. Mudéjar. 15th century. It has a large central shield, with two castles, a lion rampant and a dog or wolf. Friezes wind their way around each side. This type of ceramic, decorated in blue with cobalt oxide on a white background, has Arabic origins. It appeared in Valencia in the second half of the 14th century, coinciding with the increase in pottery production in Manises. An identical example to this is kept at the Archaeological Museum Madrid, inventory number 59790. It has been restored for fragmentation. Reference bibliography: "Reyes y Mecenas" (Kings and Patrons). Santa Cruz Museum, Toledo, 13th March – 31st May, 1992. 36 x 43 cm.
