La tireuse d'épine (The Thorn Puller), by the French sculptor Ponce Jacquiot (1515-1570) recently sold for €1,460,500 (including expenses) at Beaussant Lefèvre, and has been preempted by the Louvre Museum. The estimate was €100,000. Long believed lost, this bronze was spotted by a collector at an auction in 1976.

Cheryl Hartup will be the new director of the Puerto Rican museum, joining from her role as curator of academic programs at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art in Oregon. During that time, she forged cultural exchanges with the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid, Tate Britain in London, and the Belvedere in Vienna.

The Puerto Rican museum, designed by Edward Durrell Stone, which has been closed since a 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck the island in 2020, is exhibiting its masterpieces at the Met, including paintings by Frederic Leighton, John Everett Millais & Sir Edward Burne-Jones. The works go on display starting October 8.

With this fine pre-emption, the Louvre adds a key piece to its Renaissance bronze department.

The museum had not fully recovered from the 6.4 magnitude earthquake that devastated Puerto Rico in January 2020 when Covid-19 arrived. The museum has remained closed since, but recently named a new director: Cheryl Hartup takes charge, having been MAP’s chief curator from between 2005 and 2012. (TAN)

A statue of Spanish colonial-era general Juan Ponce de León was toppled in Puerto Rico in the early hours of January 24, days before the visit of Spanish King Felipe VI to mark the 500th anniversary of the city’s founding.
