An exhibition at the David Zwirner Gallery in Manhattan features 18 works by American artist and Abstract Expressionist, Joan Mitchell. In a career that spanned almost four decades, the exhibition, which features a range of canvases dating from 1979 to 1985, traces a short period in her later development. (NYT)

According to Artprice, the American expressionist painter recorded the second-best results in her history – just below her 2018 record – with a total of $71 M at auction for 48 works. She was the most-successful women artist on the market in 2020, ahead of Yayoi Kusama and Tamara de Lempika.

The New York-based foundation has announced the 15 artists and sculptors who will receive the $60,000 grants. The funds will be distributed over five years, during which the recipients will also be given access to “financial and career-development support”. (ARTnews)

The foundation’s new program offers longer-term support for artists working in painting and sculpture, swapping out the previous annual grants of $25,000 for a new total grant of $60,000, dispersed over 5 years. There will also be a new emphasis on offering the 15 selected artists helpful financial advice.

According to TAN, the institution is preparing an exhibition on the Impressionist and will host an adapted version of Joan Mitchell's American retrospective. A request for loans from private collectors has started. The American artist lived in France in 1959 in a house where Monet stayed.

This is the first time that a confrontation between the art of Joan Mitchell, a figure of American abstract expressionism, and the works of the "last" Monet, that of the Water Lilies, has been organized.

The Foundation for Contemporary Arts - a New York-based organization founded by artists Jasper Johns and John Cage in 1963 to benefit other artists – has named Kay Takeda as its next executive director, as of March 28. Takeda was previously deputy director of artists programs for the Joan Mitchell Foundation.

Preston H. Haskell III gifted his Alma Mater 8 major artworks by artists like Willem de Kooning and Joan Mitchell and a monumental painting by Gerhard Richter – all of which be hung in the new David Adjaye-designed building slated to open in 2024. Haskell also donated a “leadership gift” to help fund the museum.
