Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986)

Its iridescent shades have made opal a much-prized gem since classical antiquity. Though difficult to imitate, this stone inspired glassmakers to start producing magnificent opal crystal in the 19th century, before gradually shifting away from the specific features of its model.

The Centre Pompidou's exhibition - the first retrospective in France devoted to this major figure of 20th-century North American art - has already attracted 250,000 visitors. In response to this success, the museum is opening the exhibition until 11 pm, from December 1 to 5. Reservations required.

A major first in France, the Centre Pompidou's retrospective pays tribute to an American icon and does justice to her immense talent as a modern painter.

The contemporary art fair will welcome from August 25 to 28 a new section dedicated to multiples: "Edition Art & Design", with 22 international exhibitors. The Galleries sector will also feature 22 newcomers (out of 48 participants), some of whom will be celebrating their first fair in France or Europe.

The Friends of Henry O. Tanner House have launched a campagin to save and restore Tanner's childhood home at 2908 West Diamond Street in Philadelphia, which received National Landmark Status in 1976. The American artist was one of the first Black artists to be internationally recognized in the 20th-century.

Built in 1980, commissioned by a person or group using the pseudonym RC Christian, the granite monument known as “America’s Stonehenge” was damaged in an explosion Wednesday. The monument, which is engraved with guidelines for humanity and acts as an astronomical calendar, has since been demolished for safety. (BBC)

O’Keeffe visited Europe for the first time at the age of 66. Curator Marta Ruiz del Árbol has now spent 20 years trying to mount a Spanish retrospective on the artist, finally set to open in Madrid on April 26. From the Plains II (1954) will be joined by the first version of the painting for the first time. (WSJ)

In the 1960s, Tillett Textiles worked alongside designers from the local community in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, to create a vibrant range of fabrics inspired by African history. Once greatly admired by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, these prints are now on the market once again. (NY Times) 

The collector couple created one of the world's most important collections of African-American art and cultural heritage, bequeathed in part to the SCAD Museum of Art in Savannah, Georgia. Three exceptional letters from their collection are presented in Paris, at the Pantheon.

The Union of Science, Education and Culture Workers of Georgia is fighting sackings by culture minister Thea Tsulukiani. 40 workers were fired from the Georgian National Museum last week. Fired senior curator Maia Pataridze said the new management mentioned her social media posts criticizing the government. (ArtReview)
