Édouard Manet (1832-1883)

There was little doubt, but the high result achieved by Manet’s Portrait de Minnay is a happy confirmation. A pair of quiet Spanish paintings also appeared.

Two recently rediscovered watercolors by Édouard Manet illustrate the artist's work and thinking in the 1880s.

Two watercolors by Édouard Manet, Woman with a Hat (€20,000/25,000) and Almonds (€50,000/70,000), were unsurprisingly sold above their estimates for €137,160 and €116,840, today at Drouot. Recently rediscovered, they had long been in private hands.

On February 26, Drouot Estimations will present a recently rediscovered portrait of the dog Minnay, painted by Manet in around 1879 as a gift for her owner. The tableau – estimated at between €220,000 and €280,000 – was previously unknown to the public, having been in the family’s hands for over 140 years.

The Musée d'Orsay has just acquired by pre-emption one of the rare early works by Edouard Manet to have survived: a Young man's Head from the Self-Portrait by Filippino Lippi, oil on panel, 1853. This important painting enables the museum to better understand the trajectory of Manet's artistic practice.

This Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904) painting found in an antique dealer’s collection recalls that, despite his academic reputation, he was a bold artist with no peer when it came to creating powerful images.

Painted following a trip to Spain in 1865, Norton Simon's Chiffonnier and Beggar with Oysters and Beggar with a Coat from the Art Institute of Chicago are being reunited at the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena until February 28. This is a first since the major retrospective dedicated to the artist in 1966.

Édouard Manet's dog portrait, the painter's first oil painting to appear on the Parisian market since 2007, doubled its low estimate Friday, under the hammer of Drouot Estimations. His model belonged to the daughter of Mr. Gauthier-Lathuille, owner of the cabaret des Batignolles.

In collaboration with the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Musée d’Orsay focuses on the year 1874 and the first exhibition of independent artists who were soon to be called “Impressionists”.

Ships at Sea in Stormy Weather (1873) was among a collection of around 1,500 works inherited from Cornelius Gurlitt, some of which proved to be Nazi-looted. The Manet painting, cleared of Nazi connections, is being sold to the National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo, to cover the cost of managing the Gurlitt trove.
