Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528)

Through a selection of prints, drawings, paintings and journal entries, the National Gallery’s exhibition in London, "Dürer’s Journeys - Travels of a Renaissance Artist", chronicles the artist’s travels across Europe, during which he accumulated knowledge, disseminated his work and established his fame.

The small illustration measures 16.5 x 6 cm (6.5 x 2.4 in) and was discovered in a Greek volume printed in 1502 by Venetian printer and publisher Aldus Manutius. It was in the holdings of the Oldenburg State Library for 230 years before the illustration was discovered. A full investigation is to come.

Archivist Laurenz van der Linde found the engravings between the pages of books by Johannes Gerson. They most likely depict the author. Although unsigned, they are presumed to be Dürer’s, as a signed copy of one was sold at auction last year. Monastery statutes rule against the new discoveries being sold (Monopol).

The master of printmaking and the sculptor of the uncanny came together for a meditation on humanity.

Experts suspect that the painting, a two-dimensional triptych altarpiece found on a wall above the giftshop in St. Stephen’s Cathedral, was by Albrecht Dürer’s hand, suggesting an unrecorded visit to Vienna in approximately 1505. It is thought that other artists completed the painting on top of Dürer’s underdrawing.

The sale at Drouot of a collection assembled by this leading Parisian expert takes us on a fabulous journey through the first centuries of printmaking history, from Albrecht Dürer to Gabriel de Saint-Aubin. An extremely rare event.

In the midst of a flurry of art fair postponements, Master Drawings will indeed be held from January 21 to 29, in galleries predominantly located between Madison Avenue and 5th Street. Highlights include a small Madonna and Child, first exhibited at Agnews, and believed to be by Albrecht Dürer.

Mathieu Deldicque, 35, who joined the museum in 2015, will head the 2nd largest collection of Old Master paintings in France (after the Louvre). He replaces Nicole Garnier who held the position for 30 years. Deldicque was responsible for the exhibitions on Eugène Lami, The Nude Mona Lisa and Albrecht Dürer.

The research program overseen by Isabelle Dubois-Brinkmann and Aude Briau has identified and studied 500 German paintings from between 1370 and 1550, in French collections.

Awaited impatiently since its adjournment on 27 March, the sale of part of the former collection of Marcel Lecomte (1914-1996), a Parisian art lover, dealer and expert, ended with the triumph of a moving print by Rembrandt.
