Willy Ronis (1910-2009)

The White Cube gallery has appointed Courtney Willis Blair as director for the United States. A journalist by training, she was previously associate director of Mitchell-Innes & Nash Gallery in New York.

Photographer, author and curator Deborah Willis the $200,000 the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art’s Don Tyson Prize, which is earmarked for an individual or institution in the U.S. working in any medium “who is moving art forward.” Willis focuses on cultural histories envisioning the Black body, women and gender.

RM, the 27-year-old leader of Korean pop group BTS, has shown off his private art collection via Instagram. The most prominent piece in the collection is a sculpture titled, Untitled, by multidisciplinary artist, Roni Horn. (ArtNews)

Willis Blair, who first joined the gallery as an artist liaison in 2016, will be one of the first Black partners at a white-owned US gallery, according to Mitchell-Innes & Nash. She has previously worked at the Mary Ryan Gallery and at Harlem’s Studio Museum. (The Art Newspaper)

American artist Hank Willis Thomas (b. 1976) is now represented by Pace, following the merger with Kayne Griffin Gallery, while Irish artist Ted Pim (b. 1987) joins the Almine Rech stable. He will have his first exhibition in Brussels on January 19.

The McNay Art Museum acquired a seven-foot-tall sculpture by Hank Willis Thomas; the Meadows Museum secured a cache of seven works of Spanish art (17th to 20th century); the Rockport Centre for the Arts (RCA) picked up a sculpture by Jesús Moroles; and the Amon Carter Museum purchased works by 16 artists. This distinction, awarded by Les Rencontres d'Arles and Kering, honors the career of the doyenne of humanist photography. Born in Switzerland in 1924, she moved to Paris in 1946 to become Willy Maywald's assistant, then joined the Rapho agency. Her work will be exhibited at the gallery Les Douches in December. 

Penned by Arts for Afghanistan, the open letter calls on the Biden administration to designate cultural workers as at-risk individuals facing immediate danger, in evacuation plans and in visa policy revisions. It has been signed by artists including Susan Meiselas, Hank Willis Thomas and Walid Raad. 

30 works from the estate of Will Grohmann and Renate Glück will feature in the Modern and Contemporary Art Auctions in Cologne on November 29 and 30. The sale includes works by artists with whom Grohmann was close, such as Willi Baumeister and Hans Hartung, whose 1955 painting T55-13 is estimated at €100,000/150,000.
