Samuel Ringer (1918-1986)

This camera inspired by the pistol of the American Samuel Colt was patented by an Englishman, Mr. Thompson, and manufactured in around 1862 by a Parisian chemist who belonged to the Société Française de Photographie.

The “Sammy B”, which went down in the Battle Off Samar in the Philippine Sea in October 1944 after fighting the Japanese, was found 6,895m (22,621ft) underwater by Texan financier and adventurer Victor Vescovo. The images from his deep-diving submersible show the hull structure, guns and torpedo tubes. (BBC)

The destiny of three men converged on this iconic piece of Art Nouveau furniture: a unique work for the 1900 Universal Exhibition. The story is one of a rediscovery.

In collaboration with the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Musée d’Orsay focuses on the year 1874 and the first exhibition of independent artists who were soon to be called “Impressionists”.

The video work “Samuel in Space” (2013) joins three other works by the artist in the collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA). Filmed in Marfa, Texas the piece considers and reimagines how the Black male body Inhabits a landscape. 

Appointed head of collections at the Yves Saint Laurent Museum in Paris, Serena Bucalo-Mussely succeeds Aurélie Samuel, who has held the position since 2017. A curator at the Giacometti Foundation since 2013, Bucalo-Mussely has notably collaborated on the catalogue raisonné of Alberto's paintings and drawings.

The 18th-century decorative objects were assembled by industrialist Samuel Wehrli, who had acquired the Schloss Wildenstein Castle to display them. But the castle, located in an agricultural zone, could not open as a museum. The sale of his collection organized by Koller will be held from March 30 to April 1.

The University of Southern California sold the Harriet & Samuel Freeman textile-block house, designed by Wright in 1924, to developer Richard E. Weintraub for  $1.8 million. Weintraub, who is known for restoring historic properties, stated he hopes to create ”a salon for intellectual passions.” 

After 3 weeks of excavations at the site at High Hunsley, near Beverley, assistant site director Emma Samuel told the BBC that many pottery beakers and jugs were found, suggesting there may have been a medieval alehouse there. A hostelry is another theory, as “carefully butchered” sheep and cattle bones were found.
