Leonora Carrington (1917-2011)

While undertaking research for an upcoming exhibit in 2017, curator Tere Arcq came across Leonora Carrington’s series of small paintings based on the Major Arcana. British painter, writer, female Surrealist, Mexican artist and eco-feminist, these are just some of the terms used to characterize Leonora Carrington, but her art and life resist any strict definition.

The house of the English-born Mexican Surrealist artist Leonora Carrington (1917-2011) has been sold by her son for $500,000 to the Autonomous Metropolitan University with the promise to transform it into a museum. The University also donated several of her works, including 45 sculptures that will be exhibited there.

The university-led project launched online on April 6th, Carrington’s 104th birthday, hopes to run tours by the end of the year, Covid permitting. Carrington’s home for 65 years, it has an astounding 8,000 objects related to the life of the surrealist artist and is almost exactly as it was left. (The Art Newspaper)

The British-Mexican artist (1917-2011) was one of Surrealism’s central figures. Carrington rebelled against power and convention through the magical universes in her art and yet remained largely overlooked throughout art history. Now, her work can be viewed at the Arken show running through January 15, 2023. 

The second Surrealist chapter of this library highlights women who loved freedom, from Leonora Carrington to Remedios Varo.

The artistic director of the Biennale announced the main exhibition’s title, from a book by Surrealist Leonora Carrington. Three themes were also revealed: “representation of bodies and their metamorphoses; the relationship between individuals and technologies; the connection between bodies and the earth.” (Artforum)

The exhibition “Objects of Desire: Surrealism and Design 1924 – Today” opens October 14, running until February. It features almost 350 objects, including works by artists like Dalí and Leonora Carrington, but it also explores the way Surrealism inspired and inspires design, such as the Mae West Lips sofa.
