Lavinia Fontana (1552-1614)

The disturbing story of Antonietta Gonsalvus, suffering from hypertrichosis, will not leave you indifferent. Her portrait is one of the stars of the Garden Party organized at Château d'Artigny, alongside a wooden 2 CV and a manuscript by Alfred Jarry, among others.

The museum announced the acquisition of a painting by the Bolognese painter Lavinia Fontana (1552-1614), Portrait of the Musician Lucia Bonasoni Garzoni, as well as a painted Virgin and Child in wood by the Sevillian Luisa Roldán (1652-1706). This is the first sculptor before 1850 to enter the collection.

Portrait of a Lady was painted by the celebrated artist from Bologna in 1585. “A pioneer in her lifetime…the discovery and acquisition of this piece elevates VMFA’s collection of late Renaissance art,” says the institution's director, reflecting the drive to hang more works by women artists on their walls. Following 18 months of conservation and research, funded by the Bank of America Art Conservation Project, The Visit of the Queen of Sheba to King Solomon (1599), which the museum purchased in 1872, is back on its walls. To celebrate the museum is staging  “Lavinia Fontana: Trailblazer, Rule Breaker” in May 2023.

The National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia, has acquired Mystic Marriage of St Catherine (c. 1575) by the 16th-century Italian painter Lavinia Fontana, one of Europe’s first professional female artists. It is one of only 30 paintings ever attributed to Fontana by historians. 

For the next three years, the museum's atrium will play host to a spectacular installation by Italian-Argentine artist Lucio Fontana. Neon Structure for the Ninth ... – Fontana’s “most representative and legendary work”, according to the director of his foundation – was commissioned for the Triennale di Milano in 1951.

Hauser & Wirth Publishers has released the first English scholarly monograph devoted to the sculpture of the Argentinian-Italian artist, Lucio Fontana. The publication traces the evolution of his sculpture from the 1920s until 1968. An accompanying exhibition appears at the publisher’s gallery in November.
