Frida Kahlo (1907-1954)

Diego y yo (1949), a poignant self-portrait of Kahlo which shows her cheating-husband, Diego Rivera, in the center of her forehead, is expected to become the most valuable Latin American artwork ever publicly sold.

“Frida: La Experiencia Immersiva” is a 35-minute projected light show that animates 26 of the artist’s works on a large scale. Produced by Iñaki Barcos Melga with visuals by Mexican multimedia experience company Cocolab, the experience opened on July 6th, Kahlo’s 114th birthday. (Artnet)

In 2021, Frida Kahlo’s self-portrait Diego y yo broke a record by achieving the highest price ever paid for a work by a Latin American artist.

Acquired in November for $34.9 million by Eduardo F. Costantini, at a record price for the artist, the Diego y Yo canvas becomes the most expensive Latin American artwork in history. It is currently on display at the Malba in Buenos Aires, founded in 2001 by its new owner - a first in 25 years.

For the exhibition "Frida Kahlo Beyond Appearances", the Fashion Museum of the City of Paris (Palais Galliera) will show the documentary film by Giovanni Troilo, on Saturday December 17 and Sunday December 18th at 3 pm.

Louise Bourgeois, Anna-Eva Bergman (2023) and Frida Kahlo (2024), as well as the Fredriksen Collection and Scandinavian design (2022), will be the focus of the new National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design. The museum, which will become the largest in Nordic Europe, will open in Oslo in June.

Women are in the spotlight in Parisian museums: Anna-Eva Bergman at MAM, Sarah Bernhardt at the Petit Palais, Frida Kahlo at the Galliera and the Parisian women at the Carnavalet.  There is also F. Petrovitch at Vie Romantique, P. Cognée at Bourdelle and an exploration of ink at Cernuschi and pastel at the Cognac-Jay.

The Joburg Contemporary Art Foundation (JCAF) has announced an exhibition which will feature three seminal artists – Frida Kahlo, Amrita Sher-Gil and Irma Stern – together in South Africa and in Africa for the first time. The show, which examines constructions of ‘indigenous’ identities, begins October 25. (ArtAfrica)

Spain's far-right Vox party wants a mural in Madrid to be removed on the grounds of its “political message”. The 179 ft mural, painted on the wall of a sports center, honors a diverse range of women – from Nina Simone to Frida Kahlo – and bears the message: “Your ability doesn’t depend on your gender”. The museum now has in its collection two paintings by the late Surrealist: Peau de soleil (1944) and Self-Portrait and Autobiography (1948). Born in France in 1904, Alice Rahon was a poet who turned to painting after meeting Frida Kahlo in Paris, who encouraged her to settle in Mexico.
