Alice Rahon (1904-1987)

The museum now has in its collection two paintings by the late Surrealist: Peau de soleil (1944) and Self-Portrait and Autobiography (1948). Born in France in 1904, Alice Rahon was a poet who turned to painting after meeting Frida Kahlo in Paris, who encouraged her to settle in Mexico.

The actor is the artistic director of the Music Festival Les Millésimes de Tonnerre (“The Vintage of Tonnerre”) in the Yonne, a French department, which will take place from the June 25 to July 2.

The collector, gallerist and benefactor, who opened her gallery in Lausanne in 1962 after starting out in watchmaking, sadly died July 15 aged 100. A loyal exhibitor at Art Basel since the fair’s 1st edition, she notably presented the work of Pierre Soulages and Giuseppe Penone.

"They were a legendary couple and one of the greatest examples of artistic partnership," according to auctioneer Simon de Pury, who announced the artist’s passing on Instagram on Friday. Married 60 years to Newton, Springs was an internationally renowned portrait artist, photographing Yves Saint Laurent and Madonna.

After the Second World War, surrealism continued its development, especially in North America. More worried and contemplative than their male counterparts, women artists meditated on the metamorphoses of life and travel in space and time.

In the 1950s, the American couple John and Alice Pole-Woods moved to Paris, where they met another exile, Cuban painter Wifredo Lam. Their shared tastes led to a lasting friendship.

The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and the Tomi Ungerer Museum will explore the world of author Lewis Carroll this fall.
