Master of Perfume, Serge Lutens Only Trusts His Senses

Christian Dior’s former make-up director, who now lives in Marrakech, thousands of miles from his perfumery and salon at the Palais-Royal, is also, and above all, an aesthete.

Master of Perfume, Serge Lutens Only Trusts His Senses

What do you like most: painting, objects, photography?
Whatever catches my eye. The form is of little importance to me.

An artist or work that has caught your eye recently?
I’d prefer to tell you about a not-so-recent one: Notre-Dame-des-Fleurs (Our Lady of the Flowers) by Jean Genet, a novel I discovered in 1963, as all other discoveries simply followed on from it.

A work you'd like to own?

The artist who moves you most?
There are many, but they are too famous to add my name to them.

Do you prefer the FIAC or Biennale Paris?
Is there a salon of gut instinct? No, that sensation will make itself apparent wherever it wishes.

Is there a guiding theme behind your acquisitions?
My only guide is obsession, urgency. It’s very mobile!
