China, Qianlong period (1736-1795), pair of boxes in the form of peaches of immortality in red, black, green, and yellow lacquer, carved on the lid with a chun (spring) character in which Shoulao sits on his stag under a pine tree, diam. 46 x 46 x 16.5 cm (18.1 x 18.1 x 6.5 in).

This pair of boxes belong to a set of Chinese objects acquired in the early 1960s by a successful entrepreneur, with advice from the leading collector René Grog. It is uncommon to find such objects in pairs, and their size is remarkable, meaning that they could probably hold nine other boxes of the same model, designed to store small treasures.…
