A Butterfly Brooch Flying High

On 28 June 2018, by Sophie Reyssat
Suzanne Belperron (1900-1983), articulated «butterfly» brooch in yellow gold, platinum, emeralds and diamonds, hallmarked by Groene & Darde, around 13.5 cm; weight: 98.7 g. Mr Olivier Baroin’s certificate attesting to its creation by Suzanne Belperron, c. 1940.
Result: €303,460

With 157 numbers sold, this sale devoted to jewellery made an overall total of €1.5 M, ending on a high point after a half-year already marked by the fine results of the jewellery department at Aguttes, an auction house, well-positioned in the pearl market. It always attracts an essentially foreign clientèle, mainly from the Middle East. Suzanne Belperron's "butterfly" brooch flew all the way up to €303,460 after a high estimate of €50,000. Its owners, selling it after an inheritance, little knew what a treasure they held. In itself, this 1940s piece encapsulates all the designer's bold inventiveness, illustrated by the insect's extravagant wingspan, which unfolds to over 13 cm thanks to a cunning joint system.
