The sleeping man is preparatory to the engraving of "a man, a woman and a dog dozing under a tree". This engraving is part of a set of 60 plates, "Les villageois paresseux", number 50 in the series (see J.Bolten, Abraham Bloemaert, the drawings, Drukkerij Nautilus, Leiden, 2007, volume II, p.308, fig.731a. A copy of our drawing by Subleyras is in the Louvre, inv.34912 (voiropus quoted above, p.358, fig.949b).
