Félix-François-Barthélémy GENAILLE (Monceau-les-Leups, 1826-Asnières-sur-Seine, 1885)
The Return to Heaven
Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1853.
99 x 125 cm.
In an original gilt frame.
Work presented in 1853 at the Paris Salon.
A student of Henri Scheffer, Félix Genaille exhibited almost every year at the Paris Salon, from 1846 until his death in 1880, portraits, historical paintings (Le Roi Saint-Louis faisant un voeu dans la Sainte-Chapelle, 1866, Maison de l'Empereur), and religious paintings. His Return to Heaven, characteristic of a primitivist and Nazarene trend in Romantic-era sacred art, reflects the influence of his contemporary Henri Lehmann, whose Saint Catherine of Alexandria (1839) is also carried to the tomb by a procession of angels flying in a clear sky.
